Wardani Rahayu and Erwin Sulaeman

Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Abstract

The difficulty in preparing the final research project is a challenge for students as a learning experience that can affect metacognitive progress. The low quality of student scientific work can encourage the completion of studies not on time. This need triggers the development of student perception instruments in measuring metacognitive. The purpose of this study was to validate the metacognitive instrument in the preparation of research proposals as a student^s final project using expert judgment. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was done by observation method, checking the validity of data by triangulation. Three experts participated in this research and served as validators and provided suggestions for improvement based on the knowledge and experience of the expert. Expert agreement levels were calculated via Fleiss Kappa statistics. The results showed that the level of expert agreement was 0.51 in the moderate agreement category, this level of agreement is not satisfactory. Thus, the recommendations obtained were: the elimination of three dimensions, the elimination of three indicators, and the addition of 12 items, as well as the improvement of language on items that measure the dimensions of planning and critical self-reflection.

Literature Review: Development of Instruments for Measuring Emotional Climate and Attitudes in the Science Learning Environment
Hasna Rashifah, Yuli Rahmawati, Riyadi

Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Abstract

Science learning is one of the branches of knowledge that plays a role in facing the development of time. However, many students consider themselves incapable of learning science and perceive science learning as unimportant. This is further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which can result in a decline in student motivation. Meanwhile, learning motivation is an important aspect in supporting student success. Therefore, a learning environment that supports students^ learning needs to be established to stimulate student participation and reflection on learning, known as the classroom emotional climate. Additionally, positive attitudes towards science are also necessary as students^ efforts and willingness to improve academic achievements. Hence, this literature review study is conducted to develop an instrument for measuring the emotional climate and attitudes in the science learning environment, as a form of student reflection on their learning environment. The method used is conceptual analysis, referring to Walker & Avant^s (2005) approach, which includes concept selection, determining the purpose of analysis, identifying all concepts, determining defining attributes, identifying relevant attributes, and determining the concept empirically. Based on the conceptual analysis, the suitable instruments for development are the Classroom Emotional Climate instrument by Fraser (2020) and the Test of Science-Related Attitudes (TOSRA) by Fraser (1982). The conceptual analysis yielded eight dimensions, including collaboration, motivation, care, clarity, scientific inquiry, enjoyment in learning, scientific adoption, and social implications of science. Further research is needed to validate the development of the instrument for measuring the emotional climate and attitudes in the science learning environment.

Learning Model Based On Indonesian Fables To Improve Early Childhood Scientific Literacy.
Rizki Febriandani, Elindra Yetti, Ade Dwi Utami

Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Abstract

Scientific literacy ability is one of the main needs of students in the 21st century. Scientific literacy has the potential to be developed and nurtured from an early age because science is very closely related to children^s lives. In Indonesia, learning practices, especially science learning, are still more focused on academic abilities, with classical learning models and experimental methods, as well as the use of student worksheets as a measuring tool to determine students^ academic abilities. This does not provide sufficient space for children to explore their environment.
This paper is a part of the thesis, using qualitative methods to collect relevant data or sources, derived from journals, as well as observations of PAUD science learning.
The applied science learning model can be a solution to improving children^s literacy skills. This learning model is part of a group of social learning models that includes role-playing activities. One models that can be used as a reference for is the scientific playworld model. This model engages the teacher in children^s play and propose problem scenarios (such as game inquiry) as part of constructing the game^s narrative. The Narratives used in learning can help children develop their thinking skills through imaginative exploratory play activities. The narration used can also vary and one of them is fables which are widely found in various regions in Indonesia. The results obtained from the content observation show that the teacher^s dominance is more visible because of the instructions that are continuously given to children, with the intention that children understand their roles and benefit from playing these roles

Abstract

Abstract for the ICHEDS 2023
Successful school principalship during the COVID-19 crisis: The case of Kazakhstan
Scope: Educational Management
Meruyert Seidumanova, PhD Candidate, The Education University of Hong Kong

The COVID-19 pandemic, which rapidly spread globally in 2020, resulted in the closure of schools and disrupted the education of approximately 1.3 billion learners worldwide. During this crisis, the role of school principals became increasingly significant as they were entrusted with higher autonomy in decision-making and crisis management. School principals not only fulfilled their regular duties but also played vital roles in facilitating distance learning, serving as frontline workers by distributing food to families and delivering devices to students, and maintaining the morale of the school community. The pandemic has brought to light long-standing issues within education systems, presenting opportunities for positive change. The response of school principals during this crisis determined whether they seized the opportunity to reinvent their schools for positive outcomes or missed the chance to bring about improvements. As schools gradually reopened worldwide, it is crucial to analyze the lessons learned and successful practices implemented by school principals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Kazakhstan, the COVID-19 pandemic had an unprecedented impact on the education system, leading to the closure of approximately 7400 schools and the transition of around 3 million students to online learning (Press Centre of the Ministry of Education and Science, 2020). To understand how school principals in Kazakhstan navigated and responded to this crisis, a qualitative research methods were utilized, and in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 successful school principals in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The study aimed to explore the perspectives of successful principals and the practices they employed during the COVID-19 crisis. The research questions focused on understanding their experiences and examining their approaches to leadership during this challenging period.
The findings of the study revealed three overarching themes that captured the principals^ understanding of the crisis: Stress and Challenges, Innovation and Transformation, and Holistic Education: Promoting Wellbeing. Additionally, six themes emerged to describe the successful practices adopted by these principals: Emergency Leading and Teaching, Proactive Resolution of Challenges in Remote Education, Enhancement of Online Learning, Management of the New Normal for Students and Teachers, Adaptation to Uncertainty, and Balancing between Pre and Post-Pandemic Education. Furthermore, in response to the third research question, four themes were identified as lessons that can be learned from the experiences of school principals in Kazakhstan: Avoiding Excessive Reliance on Government Support, Fostering Collaboration and Teamwork between Schools and Communities, Extending Support Beyond the School, and Actively Engaging in a Growth Mindset and Continuous Learning.
This study holds important implications for school leaders, policymakers, and school leadership programs. Future principals can benefit from the strategies employed by successful school leaders during times of crisis, encompassing both the disruptive and recovery phases. School leadership and professional development programs can incorporate the insights gained from this study into their training by focusing on change and crisis leadership, the development of online learning strategies, prioritizing mental health, and fostering networking and collaboration among principals. Policymakers can utilize the study^s findings to reassess the autonomy of school principals, integrate digital learning techniques into schools, formulate a national crisis mitigation strategy, and allocate increased funding for the renovation of older school buildings in Kazakhstan.
Furthermore, this study contributes to the existing literature on school leadership during crises and school principalship in the post-Soviet Union Central Asian region. It expands upon and enhances current frameworks for navigating disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby bridging gaps in school principalship literature in Kazakhstan.

Teacher management in a dynamic space: A study of Cambodian public higher education institutions
Chan Hum, Sing-Kai Lo

Graduate School, The Education University of Hong Kong

Abstract

Cambodian education has transformed from a traditional bureaucratic and state-centralized system to relative autonomy. While significantly improving the quality of academic programs and expanding physical infrastructures, personnel management practices in public higher education institutions are perceived as weak and fractured and should be given more research attention. Therefore, this study examines how higher education teachers express their thoughts on recruitment, professional development, performance appraisal and compensation practices in four HEIs. More specifically, the study investigates teachers^ experiences in alignment with management practices to enhance their performance competencies. This study collects data through an online survey with 120 teachers and an independent t-sample test, and ANOVA will be performed to generate the findings. The study will argue that the current teacher management practices in recruitment, professional development, performance appraisal, and compensation in the studied HEIs remain centralized and, therefore, at far-reaching institutional autonomy. Although the government decentralizes the management procedures to HEIs, the actual practices must be more consistent due to a lack of comprehensive guidelines and a less tentative institutional strategy to improve staffing autonomy. This study will inform government policymakers, university leaders and researchers about the issues of the personnel management system at Cambodian public HEIs, and opens the door for further debates.

State University of Jakarta

Abstract

The government is striving to enhance the quality of society through education. The success of government programs in the education sector is measured by the community^s participation in pursuing education. The level of educational participation can be measured through indicators such as School Participation Rate (APS), Gross Enrollment Ratio (APK), and Net Enrollment Ratio (APM). Low-income families often face high workloads to meet basic needs such as food, healthcare, and housing, leaving limited time and energy to support their children^s education. Therefore, poverty remains an unresolved issue that impacts educational participation.

The influence of the quantity and quality of teachers is crucial. Sufficient and qualified teachers can improve the learning process^s access, quality, and effectiveness, thereby motivating the community to participate in education. The increase in the number of qualified teachers and their equitable distribution across the DKI Jakarta region must be prioritized to enhance educational participation and mitigate the impact of poverty.

The data collection method involves the utilization of secondary data through documentation techniques, where the data used are reports from the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) containing information on poverty rates, the number of teachers, and the Gross Enrollment Ratio of high school students in DKI Jakarta from 2016 to 2021. However, for the number of teachers, data is only available for the years 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021, thus the researcher utilized the most recent four years of data.

Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Abstract

The policy of inclusive education in public schools is stated in the 1945 Constitution that every citizen has the right to receive the same education. However, the policies 2009 have does not well. This study aims to analyze eight national education standards for inclusive children who are in public schools. This study uses a qualitative approach with the case study method where researchers conduct observations, interviews, and document studies with related parties to collect data to be analyzed. The research was conducted in two different elementary school areas, the Tebet area and the Jatinegara area, both of which had different handling of inclusive children in public schools. From the results of observations and interviews with school principals, classroom teachers, and inclusive children^s special teachers, the two schools prove the government^s lack of attention to schools for the policies they issue. Even school principals and homeroom teachers who teach these children feel that there has not been socialization to implement inclusive education, especially regarding teaching staff. This research is based on the school^s response to the policy of inclusive child education in the two public elementary schools. It looks at the state of schools in responding to government policies even though the eight educational standards have not been properly met. The biggest obstacles are the lack of quantity and quality of special companion teachers, information in evaluating inclusive children, facilities that are not available, teachers who do not have expertise in dealing with inclusive children, and special budget allocations for inclusive children. Schools in the Tebet object to adjusting their limited resources because it^s a shame if children do not get more attention. Whereas in the Jatinegara, there is no objection to accepting inclusive children because the school is a special school for inclusive children which has been converted into a public elementary school.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how Rumah Tahfidz Sabilul Quran cover all their operating cost solely with the power of word-of-mouth donors. Education is costly, moreover for a pesantren or boarding school which also need to provide for the students. Many added this cost to the tuition, but some like Rumah Tahfidz Sabilul Quran boldly made their tuition 100% free. Interviewing the staff revealed that they havent actually done much. The only thing that the staff does is to routinely attend weekly local Islamic seminars alongside students. But in doing so, they were approached with an offer by the imam to publicize their school online, which went viral within the seminars community. This established their presence within the minds of many people, enticing many of those same people to donate to their cause. Unknowingly, by remaining humble, Rumah Tahfidz Sabilul Quran earned a good image for themselves, and people became more willing to help them cover their operation costs.
