Abstract
Digital transformation in Islamic educational institutions cannot be sustained through technological adoption alone. It requires a collectively constructed vision that serves as the foundation for contextual and sustainable planning. This study addresses two central questions: how participatory visioning unfolds within a community-embedded educational institution, and how the resulting vision gives rise to a structured digital transformation roadmap. Employing a participatory qualitative approach within an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) framework, this study engaged teachers, school leaders, students, and community figures from four surrounding nagari through three collaborative stages, namely Define, Discovery, and Dream, at MAN 4 Tanah Datar, West Sumatra. The findings reveal that the visioning process unfolded through rich community deliberation involving deep negotiation across technological, social, religious, and ecological values. The historical social bonds between the madrasah and surrounding nagari, shared Minangkabau cultural values, and collective ecological awareness emerged as critical participatory capital that shaped the quality and legitimacy of the visioning process. The collective vision produced was subsequently translated into a three-year innovation roadmap comprising five strategic programs, namely digital competency enhancement for all stakeholders, culture and environment integrated curriculum, student-produced digital content, community economic collaboration through local products, and an annually held community digital collaboration event. This study contributes to the discourse on participatory research and digital interconnectivity by demonstrating that a collectively grounded vision is both a prerequisite for legitimacy and the primary enabler of adaptive and sustainable digital transformation in community-embedded educational institutions.
