Collaborative Innovation Systems: A Systematic Literature Review of Determinants and Organizational Performance Outcomes

Abstract

In an era characterized by digital disruption and increasing business complexity, organizations are required to develop innovation capabilities that extend beyond internal boundaries and embrace collaborative approaches. A Collaborative Innovation System (CIS) has emerged as a strategic mechanism that enables multiple stakeholders, including firms, governments, universities, communities, and customers, to jointly create, develop, and implement innovations. This study aims to analyze the concept, dynamics, and key determinants influencing the effectiveness of collaborative innovation systems in enhancing organizational performance and sustaining innovation. The study employs a systematic literature review method by examining scholarly articles published in reputable international journals between 2015 and 2025. The findings indicate that the success of a Collaborative Innovation System is largely influenced by several critical factors, including inter-organizational trust, communication quality, collaborative leadership, knowledge-sharing capability, digital technology support, and effective network governance. Furthermore, the integration of resources and competencies across organizational boundaries has been shown to enhance innovation capacity, accelerate product and service development, and generate sustainable competitive advantage. Nevertheless, challenges such as cultural differences, conflicting interests, and intellectual property protection remain significant barriers to effective implementation. Therefore, adaptive coordination mechanisms and inclusive collaboration strategies are essential to optimize the benefits of collaborative innovation systems. This study offers both theoretical and practical implications for advancing innovation management across various sectors.
