^Optimization of Microhydro Power Potential: A Case Study of Alur Batu Waterfall in Aceh Tamiang for Sustainable Energy Solutions^

Abstract

A Micro Hydro Power Plant is a small-scale hydropower system with a low head and an output of less than 200 kilowatts. In Selamat Village, there are five waterfalls, one of which is the Alur Batu Waterfall, with a height of approximately 11.8 meters, and it flows continuously, even during long dry seasons. This study aims to identify the characteristics of the water flow, discharge, and head at the research site, and to calculate the electrical power potential based on both flow discharge and dependable discharge. The research employs a quantitative approach, with direct field measurements accompanied by climatological data analysis to assess the energy potential. The climatological data analyzed includes rainfall, temperature, solar radiation, humidity, and wind speed, which are processed using the FJ. Mock method. The physical characteristics of the water flow show that the water surface is choppy and foamy, moving irregularly and turbulently due to the steep gradient and rocky terrain of the waterfall. Based on the analysis using the Reynolds number, the Alur Batu waterfall exhibits turbulent flow, with a head height of approximately 8.6 meters. With a field flow discharge of 0.89 m3/s, the potential electrical power generated is 48.75 kW. The dependable discharge, at 0.59 m3/s, can generate a potential electrical power of 32.28 kW. Based on the analysis of PLTMH potential using both the field discharge and dependable discharge, the dependable discharge is more suitable for planning and calculating the potential of PLTMH, as it provides a more realistic representation of water availability throughout the year, whereas field discharge reflects momentary conditions that may fluctuate.
