Abstract

Batik, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, increasingly moved from local workshops into digital marketplaces, creating new commercial opportunities as well as new ethical risks for Indonesian micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) that produced it. This study examined how ethical governance could be integrated into the digital entrepreneurship practices of batik UMKM to protect the authenticity of traditional motifs while sustaining innovation and market growth. A qualitative literature-based design was applied, synthesizing Scopus-indexed and reputable peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025 through thematic content analysis. The findings showed that digital platforms expanded market access, branding capacity, and storytelling opportunities for batik artisans, but simultaneously accelerated motif duplication, machine-printed imitation, and cross-border misappropriation of designs. Existing legal instruments, namely copyright, geographical indication, and communal intellectual property, remained underutilized because of low registration awareness, high administrative cost, and unclear benefit-sharing mechanisms for communal creations. Building on these findings, the study proposed an ethical governance framework that combined digital motif registration and traceability, platform-level authenticity verification, community-based communal recognition, artisan digital literacy, and multi-stakeholder collaboration among government, marketplaces, and craft communities. This framework positioned responsible digital entrepreneurship as a mechanism to reconcile innovation with cultural integrity, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and ethically governed batik business ecosystem. Future empirical research involving batik-producing regions was recommended to validate the practical applicability of the proposed framework.
