Fostering Sustainable Business Ecosystems: A Responsible Digital Entrepreneurship Framework

Abstract

The rapid acceleration of the digital economy has enabled digital entrepreneurs to scale businesses at an unprecedented pace. However, this hyper-growth often overlooks long-term societal and environmental impacts, leading to critical issues such as data privacy breaches, algorithmic bias, and rising electronic waste. In the contemporary digital era, entrepreneurship must evolve beyond mere profit generation toward ^Responsible Digital Entrepreneurship^ (RDE), a paradigm that integrates technological innovation with ethical governance and social sustainability. This study aims to propose a conceptual RDE framework that balances technological advancement, regulatory compliance, and social responsibility. It investigates how digital startups can integrate ethical governance into their core business models to foster a resilient and sustainable business ecosystem. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this research employs a systematic literature review (SLR) combined with multi-case study analyses of five prominent digital enterprises operating across Southeast Asia. Data were gathered from corporate sustainability reports, regulatory frameworks, and semi-structured interviews with platform founders and digital governance experts. The findings reveal that responsible digital entrepreneurship relies on three core pillars: ethical data governance, inclusive innovation that bridges the digital divide, and eco-digital accountability to mitigate infrastructure carbon footprints. Furthermore, platforms implementing proactive ethical governance demonstrate higher consumer trust and superior long-term market resilience. This research concludes that digital innovation cannot remain detached from social equity. The proposed RDE framework provides a practical roadmap for tech founders to align their ventures with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while offering vital policy recommendations for governments.
