Abstract
Biomembrane applications in the biomedical field continue to increase. Chitosan, a cationic polymer, has potential use as a hemodialysis membrane because it can be readily formed into thin layers. Chitosan is biodegradable and economical, but it has drawbacks, including poor mechanical strength and acid stability. Therefore, chitosan needs to be combined with a biopolymer with a different charge, such as alginate. The combination of chitosan and alginate forms a stable polyelectrolyte complex. The study aimed to synthesize and characterize a chitosan-pectin-poly(vinyl alcohol) (Chi-Pec-PVA) membrane for hemodialysis. The morphological, thermal, and mechanical characterization of the membrane was performed by Tensile Test, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The membrane^s efficiency for creatinine transport from aqueous solution was tested using a batch method. The results showed that the Chi-Pec-PVA membrane was successfully synthesized. The membrane was identified as a semicrystalline phase present in the microspheres. The addition of PVA increases the membrane^s mechanical strength, as measured in the tensile test. The creatinine clearance was 93.1% and the urea reduction ratio was 91.3%, indicating good selectivity of the Chi-Pec-PVA as a hemodialysis membrane.
