Abstract

Silymarin is prone to degradation under acidic conditions, necessitating an effective carrier to improve its stability. In this study, a Fe&#8323-O&#8324- chitosan alginate nanocomposite incorporating Leucaena leucocephala peel extract was developed for silymarin delivery. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of dissolution pH and silymarin concentration on its release behavior, as well as to determine the release kinetics. Encapsulation efficiency was determined by immersing the silymarin-loaded nanocomposite for 24 hours. The release study was conducted over 4 hours with variations in dissolution pH and silymarin concentration. The absorbance of the samples was measured using a UV Vis spectrophotometer, and the release data were analyzed using zero order, first order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer Peppas kinetic models. The nanocomposite was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). FTIR results showed shifts in the characteristic peaks of chitosan alginate and the appearance of a new peak at 555.8 corresponding to FeO vibrations. XRD analysis indicated that the nanocomposite exhibited an amorphous structure
