Abstract

Sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) wood is an abundant lignocellulosic biomass resource in Indonesia with significant potential as a renewable source of lignin for sustainable material applications. This study aims to isolate and characterize lignin obtained from sengon wood in order to evaluate its chemical structure and thermal properties. Lignin isolation was carried out through alkaline delignification followed by acid precipitation to recover the lignin fraction. The structural and physicochemical characteristics of the isolated lignin were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify functional groups, X-Ray Diffraction XRD) to determine crystalinity, and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to asses thermal stability. The FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of characteristic lignin funtional groups, including aromatic skeletal vibrations of phenylpropane units, hydroxyl (-OH), and methoxy (-OCH3) groups. XRD analysis indicated a predominantly amorphous structure, while TGA results revealed thermal stability up to approximately 200 &#61616-C, with the main degradation stage occuring between 250-400 &#61616-C. these findings demonstrate that lignin isolated from sengon wood possesses chemical and thermal properties suitable for further development in value-added applications such as bioplastics, adsorbents, and biomass-based composite materials.
