Abstract

One of the primary by-products of nuclear reactor operations is the Cesium-137 (137Cs) isotope. This isotope is classified as a long-lived radioisotope with a half-life of 30.17 years. 137Cs is a radioactive material that is very light and easily spreads to the environment, causing great harm to living things. One solution is to capture Cs+ ions in the three-dimensional lattice space of the transition metal hexacyanoferrates which well known as Prussian Blue analog (PBA), this material possesses lattice structures equivalent in size to hydrated cesium ions, allowing PBA to selectively adsorb cesium ions amidst other coexisting ions by ion exchange. PBA with chemical formula K2Fe[Fe(CN)6] were synthesized using the coprecipitation process. K is used because of its similarity with Cs. This research is focused on analyzing the crystallographic structure ofPrussian blue analog as preliminary studies of adsorbents for 137Cs removal. Based on the refinement results of the X-ray diffraction pattern PBA was successfully synthesized which resulting Chi2 around 1.12 and RWP value 0.0324. FESEM result confirm that PBA has cubic structure with averaged size 25 nm. FTIR analysis confirm that synthesized PBA exhibit vibrations within the 2100-2200 cm-1 wavenumber range, which are attributed to the &#957- C&#8801-N stretching modes of the cyanide groups within the M-N&#8801-C-Fe framework. Additionally, vibrations observed in the 470 - 500 cm-1 range serve as the fingerprint for Fe-C bond stretching. The presence of these bands in all samples confirms that the [Fe(CN)6] units remain intact and function as bridging ligands between the metal centers. BET analysis resulted synthesized PBA surface area about 182, 554 m2/g. Adsorption behavior isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamic of synthesized PBA was investigated.
