Structural-Semiotic Study of Turun Tanah Tradition in Tamiang Malay Society As an Effort to Preserve Culture

Abstract

This research discusses the meaning of the Turun Tanah
tradition of the Tamiang Malay community in semiotic studies.
The problem in this study is how the Turun Tanah tradition
procession of the Tamiang Malay community and what is the
semiotic meaning of the Turun Tanah tradition procession of the
Tamiang Malay community. The purpose of this research is to
describe the Turun Tanah tradition procession of Tamiang
Malay community and the semiotic meaning of the Turun Tanah
tradition procession of Tamiang Malay community. This
research uses descriptive qualitative method, with the research
location in Sukaramai II Village, Seruway District, Aceh
Tamiang Regency. The data source in this research is the Turun
Tanah tradition procession. The data of this research is in the
form of activities carried out in the Turun Tanah tradition
procession. Data collection techniques include observation,
interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques were
carried out through three stages, namely data reduction, data
presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that
the semiotic meaning found was twenty-nine symbols in the
equipment and procession of Turun Tanah of the Tamiang
Malay community.
