Abstract

Construction projects in Langsa City generate significant material waste, such as sand, metal roofing, cement, and wood, which are unavoidable during construction. This waste arises due to various factors, including miscalculation of orders, improper handling of materials, and ineffective construction management. This study analyzes the main causes and effectiveness of construction material waste management in housing projects in Langsa City, Aceh. Data were collected through field observations and the distribution of 30 questionnaires to contractors, supervisory consultants, site managers, and foremen in the field. The types of materials that most often become waste include sand, metal roofing roofing, cement, and wood. This study found that inadequate material management and project supervision were the main causes of material waste. The results of statistical analysis using Kendall^s W test showed that there was agreement between respondents in assessing the factors causing material waste, with a W value = 0.146 and a calculated Chi-square = 48.324. The recommendations produced were the implementation of better waste management strategies, such as optimizing material orders, increasing supervision in the field, and implementing material recycling practices to reduce negative impacts on the environment. This research provides an important contribution to the development of sustainable construction practices in Langsa City, especially in minimizing material waste and increasing project efficiency.
