THE EXTRACURRICULAR ROLE OF YOUTH RED CROSS IN IMPROVING THE MENTAL HEALTH OF SCHOOL COMMUNITIES

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that has plagued Indonesia in 2020, there have been significant changes in daily activities ranging from work, school, social activities, and so on. Including in the world of education, the Covid-19 pandemic has an impact on teaching and learning activities that are usually carried out in schools. According to research, The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in collaboration with UNESCO, UNICEF, and the World Bank has evaluated the impact of the pandemic on education in various countries in the world, with student mental health being the greatest impact as many as 89% affected. In addition, teacher mental health in 69% of countries evaluated the impact of the pandemic on education. Not only students, teachers^ mental health has also been disrupted due to the pandemic and the distance learning system.
According to research in 2021, the Youth Red Cross helps optimize disease prevention in the Covid-19 Era, various activities carried out by Youth Red Cross in Surakarta according to the needs of the Covid-19 period besides being able to create new habits and reduce the risk of disease transmission in schools. Based on previous research, Youth Red Cross has various roles that can answer needs. Previous research has generally been on the various roles of Youth Red Cross in the context of first aid and moral formation and PMR Management in schools. So the researcher compiled a formulation of the problem, namely: What is the role of extracurricular PMR in improving the mental health of the school community? Who is involved in improving the mental health of the school community? and How Youth Red Cross collaborates with Guidance counseling teachers and other communities in this regard. Post-Pandemic Mental Health is one of the problems that occur in general in schools and to look further at the role of PMR in improving mental health. Therefore, researchers are interested and this research is needed.
