Abstract
Purposes: The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of israf consumer behavior which is represented by the amount of food waste on sustainable development goals and maslahah while the increasing halal food industry is happening in OIC countries.
Methods: This research is a quantitative study that applies a regression model with food waste as an independent variable and co2 emissions, GDP per capita growth, and the prevalence of undernourishment as dependent variables. The panel data set used consists of a time series from 2011-2020 and cross-sectional data are taken from 57 countries.
Results: The increasing halal industry sector tends to have problems like the increase in food waste. The theory of consumer behavior states that the utility will decrease after the need for food is fulfilled. Israf consumption or overconsumption behavior produces food waste. Israf behavior is prohibited in Islam, QS. Al-a^raf (7):31. The result shows that the increase of food waste influences many SDGs levels and maslahah in OIC countries. Food waste has an impact on the climate which showed by the increase in CO2 emissions, the increasing prevalence of undernourishment in a country, and economic loss which showed by the market value of food products.
Suggestion: The amount of food waste should be controlled first by our behavior, like only eating when hungry and stopping before full like the prophet Muhammad SAW suggested. Reducing israf behavior toward food consumption is an act to gain maslahah and SDGs. Besides that, the government of OIC countries should be concerned about this problem by innovating technology systems to control food waste, such as advanced foodbank or blockchain food chain supply, and etc.
